Neither the rickety chairs of the Hollywood Theater nor strange June weather of sun and rain could take my attention away from the impressive cinematography, music, and storytelling in each episode of Food Foray. In a packed theater, we delved into the lives of three immigrants and their communities in East Multnomah County, the most diverse region in Oregon.

What a treat to hear director Ivana Horvat and producer John Lugton give us behind-the-scenes tidbits, like music choice and the challenge of shooting in a small store, and even more so to have the main characters come on stage following their blow-up on screen. Nino, Amalia, and Stephen are people we quickly come to like in the 20 minutes that we see them in each episode. There is something so arresting about the rhythm of their chopping, their use of cookware, and the setting of each table, as the host, Jessica Ballard Thiessen, has heart-to-heart conversations decorated by these elaborate meals. The topics they discuss resonate so strongly, even if I immigrated from a different country under different circumstances.

The first episode introduces Nino Tvauri from Georgia, walking us through the Babushka Russian Deli. That scene reminded me of my first time going to an Asian grocer after relocating to the United States, wandering long aisles, picking out a prized item, and reminiscing. Seeing such true-to-life moments in Food Foray was a nod to this necessary activity for immigrants like me, finding our memories at an international grocery store.

Food is a critical memory bank, a salve for the ache of homesickness, an avenue to preserve culture that could easily be forgotten; it is a point that Food Foray evocatively told across three spectrums. Every episode displayed the characters’ passion and pride to share food from their heritage. Here, two worlds collide—food memories from lives past, and life now in Oregon, having access to specialized ingredients. Being able to make our cultural foods without substitutes is a key part of adapting to a new place, a privilege not to be taken for granted. The act of needing to make food deserves mention, as these were dishes not readily available despite a thriving restaurant scene in Portland.

Therein lies the beauty of the messaging in Food Foray. The series highlights universal sentiments and burdens we carry as immigrants in the US, like the people we left for new opportunities. Whether it was coming to terms with being separated from a sibling for an undetermined amount of time or never seeing one’s birthplace again in exchange for safety and stability, these stories showed the strength and resilience it takes to build a new life away from home. As the audience was invited to taste delectable bites seen on the show, it felt like the organizers were expanding the dinner table for us all to be part of the conversations in each episode. It set the tone for an intimate and safe way to find belonging in a place that looks so different from our home countries.

MetroEast’s paid BIPoC Contractor Program (BCP) is a supervised learning experience in video production aimed to uplift marginalized creatives through career building opportunities. There is no question that BIPoC communities are underrepresented in every film and video industry employment front. According to the 2020 Hollywood Diversity Report, BIPoC communities make up 40% of the US population, yet only 15% of directors identify as BIPoC.

Our program aims to minimize this divide. It decenters whiteness in the industry giving applicants hands-on experience in professional productions, production credits to help bolster their resumes, access to thousands of dollars worth of gear, mentors so they can get established to use their passion in video production not only to create art, but to finance their lives.

We set out to explore questions surrounding our connection, disconnection and ultimate reconnection to water: How do indigenous people view their connection to water? How did the new inhabitants of this land become disconnected from the waters after settling here? How can we reconnect to the waters- and to each other? Our hope is that our film inspires conversations around how each of us can find our own unique way of feeling connected to the land and water we call our home and thereby have more stake in protecting it.

FOLLOW THE WATER explores the ripple effect of being physically and spiritually disconnected from the waters of the Pacific Northwest and what we can learn from the indigenous stewards of the land. We worked with the great people at Clean Rivers Coalition a nonprofit who partnered with the Columbia Inter-Tribal Fish Commission to produce this film in 2021-2022.

YouTube and TikTok are arguably the most popular venues for video distribution. They provide a venue for users to share their ideas and talents.

Our last summer camp of 2022 was the YMCA Video Workshop; we went out with a bang! We taught local underprivileged youth how to film fun and creative videos on the iPad. We started off with a short presentation on filmmaking fundamentals including shot types, panning and tilting, and how to hold the Ipad correctly to create good looking content.

We split the youth into groups and let them decide what kind of videos they wanted to make. There were plenty of options to choose from! We brought Legos to create timelapses and costumes and props for all kinds of make believe videos. Additionally, we encouraged the youth to incorporate the different shot types that they had just learned about as they were deciding what to film.

In post production, we had participants edit their videos in the iMovie app so that they could insert more personal touches through filters and special effects. They were excited to have such a wide variety of possibilities. Finally, we showcased all the videos during a group screening. It was inspiring to see what all of the kids came up with! The final films ranged from a sweet portrayal of a youth skating on his hoverboard to an elaborate Lego house timelapse.

The goal of the workshop was to help kids unlock their creative potential through expanded access to technology. It was a joy to work with these talented youth–we’re always grateful to see what their creative minds come up with. We are very thankful for the YMCA’s support as well.

YouTube and TikTok are arguably the most popular venues for video distribution. They provide a venue for users to share their ideas and talents. If you want to share your work it behooves artists to know about these platforms and how to produce videos with high production quality! This camp will teach participants the basics of composition, light, audio, editing and storytelling on a mobile device. They’ll learn how to plan their production so it meets their desired aesthetic and how to distribute the final product to reach the most people.

First is that we are planning on putting our award-winning Community Hotline (CHL) on hiatus until next summer. For over 25 years CHL has been bringing the stories of our community to life hosted by MetroEast staffer Monica Weizel for over a decade. Monica is leaving MetroEast in November and it feels right to take a hiatus and rebuild CHL for the very different world than existed when the show first aired in 1990.

We want to rebuild the show into a format that speaks to our current times and the myriad ways we all consume media, as well as build a producing team and host pool that represents the awesome diversity of our community. We will be editing a “Best of” Community Hotline episode where we will showcase some of our favorite guests and segments and honor Monica for her years of host excellence – look for that in mid-November.

Dismissing our gnarly heat wave from this year and the ongoing pandemic with it’s tumultuous changes in mandates or restrictions, we’re happy to announce that we here at MetroEast continued on strong throughout this past summer.

Pivotal to our summer programs and experiences was the outfitting of our Mobile Media Lab. With the installation of a lift gate, awning, side mounted projector and battery array, our Mobile Media Lab was upgraded with the necessary equipment needed to punch out some fun, high-tech, and educational experiences for youth around our communities. Along with installations to the van, we’ve also outfitted our headquarters with laptops, iPads, software, and other equipment to better facilitate our programs. With a lift gate, our Mobile Media Lab is ready to transport mobile classrooms with tech such as iPads around the area.

With our Mobile Media Lab ready to go, we were set to start off our summer with a variety of events and programs such as our Youtube and Tik Tok camp, Reynolds Middle School Video Camp, and the Black Education Achievement Movement Workshop. Through the SKIP (Summer Kids in the Park) program, we were able to utilize our Mobile Media Innovation Lab to provide fun popups in parks throughout our community.

As we delve further into this Digital Inclusion Week, we’d like to note our first hand experiences with the digital divide here in East county. During our Nadaka Park popup for the SKIP program, we found our highest level of participation and interest with a youth camp for the BIPOC community around the area. Yet, Nadaka Park was also where we struggled the most with finding usable internet reception with our mobile router setup. Thus, we were directly affected by our digital divide during the summer pop-ups, a time in which we needed faster internet the most. Below, we have maps of our current digital divide within East county based on access to internet and resources:

As seen in the map above, our SKIP program was primarily based around the “opportunity” and “low-income” zones within the circled portion of the map above. Within this area, we can see that these zones have less available internet providers with affordable and fast internet.

Digital Media Navigators is one example of what close collaboration and mutual trust can achieve! MetroEast officially launched Virtual Art Night, a series of project-based classes, with themes and goals developed with much input from participants and community leaders. Project goals are designed to celebrate and preserve art, language, culinary and musical traditions!

, Monica is saying goodbye. Her position at MetroEast is being eliminated due to budget constraints, and so she will be retiring. She says being part of the program and seeing herself on TV has been the most fun she ever had on a job. She states that “working with Emily has been a joy. She is the consummate professional and also a very good friend. We’ve had wonderful crews over the years. But one of the best parts has been being able to showcase the great work of nonprofit leaders and others who work so tirelessly to make a positive difference in our communities. It has truly been a pleasure and an honor to serve in this way.”

As East Multnomah County has become more diverse, we applied our equity and inclusion lens to accommodate underserved groups deepening our partnerships with communities of color, immigrants and refugees, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and low-income families. Part of this effort has been seeking input through workshops, community stakeholder advice, listening sessions, and the formation of an education advisory board. We are addressing one of the most common barriers: transportation prevents participants from experiencing our training and workshops.

The Mobile Media Innovation Lab is a way to bring MetroEast’s media magic to the masses. There are thousands of people in East County, many immigrants, refugees and other underserved communities, that do not have access to media technology that will give them a voice in the 21st century. Our goal is to empower underserved communities in East County by bringing the classes to them where they are. We will bring media education including filmmaking, Virtual Reality media creation, video game coding and design, podcasting, and digital storytelling to East Multnomah County residents via workshops and public events.
